Workshops, Seminars and Training

It is important for the Regional Center of Orange County (RCOC) parents, family members of people with developmental disabilities, and persons served to have good information to make informed decisions. To provide more information about developmental disabilities and equip them with new skills for success, this section features information about workshops, seminars, and training sessions offered by RCOC and other organizations.

There is also information about and from RCOC’s Comfort Connection Family Resource Center, where parents of children with special needs have access to a broad array of scientific information and many parent and family support resources.

Sources of Support

Support services are provided to persons receiving services from a regional center to meet the goals and objectives of the Individual Program Plan (IPP) or the Individual Family Service Program (IFSP) (for children ages 0-3 years). Services may be provided through vendors approved by RCOC or through other resources. RCOC is mandated not only to serve persons with developmental disabilities but to provide services in the most cost-effective manner possible. We are required by the Lanterman Act to use all other resources or generic resources first before using regional center funds. A generic agency is legally responsible for serving all members of the general public and receiving public funds for providing those services. Other resources include natural supports, school districts, etc.

  • In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS)
  • Respite Services
  • Transportation Services
  • Day Program Services
  • Education Services
  • Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion Programs
  • Independent Living Program
  • Self-Determination Program
  • Work Services Program

Generic Resources

A “generic” resource is any agency with a legal responsibility to serve all members of the general public and receive public funds for providing those services. What they offer may be helpful for you, your child, or your family and does not require funding from RCOC. Some examples of generic resources or supports are:

  • Medi-Cal
  • California Children’s Services (CCS)
  • The Department of Rehabilitation (DOR)
  • Your local school district
  • City, county and state housing assistance
  • Community legal services
  • In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS)
  • Family Resource Centers
  • County Health and Human Services
  • County Medical Clinics
  • County Mental Health

For more information about Generic Services, please visit our Description of Services Provided page.

While RCOC does not provide funding for these resources or supports, they may be identified in the individualized plan developed for you or your child.
